Travel Story: Blackberry Farm

Fly Fishing in Blackberry Farms

December 2021

When my dad found out Matthew and I were fly fishing at Blackberry Farm, he told us we needed to read Simplified Fly Fishing by S. R. Slaymaker - written by a friend of the Kent side of the family.

Before arriving, I read Kreis Beall’s Great Blue Hills of God. This is a story of Kreis Beall’s faith, and I would give this book as a gift to anyone. My copy is all marked up and underlined. It moved me - I hope you enjoy it too! Overall, it added so much depth to the Blackberry Farm experience…looking at it through her point of view, through the lens of her book.

It was beautifully decorated for Christmas. Kreis Beall is most notably known for her interior design and hospitality expertise, and she still oversees several design projects for the resort hotels. Mary Celeste Beall is now the proprietor of both Blackberry Farm and Blackberry Mountain.

The food and dining experience at Blackberry is worth harping on the most. It’s out of this world. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner...exceptional. Like nothing else anyone had ever experienced.

Overall, the best part of the trip was having a few days of uninterrupted time in a beautiful, spacious location, to reconnect with loved ones and to dwell, intentionally.

I brought my film camera along and went on long photo walks to capture what inspired me. I sat next to Matthew by the creek and wrote poems, freely. I took a painting class to do nothing but paint for two hours. There’s nothing like solitary space and time, and then space and time shared with people who are special to us.
